Netflix Q3 Preview: $12.86 Billion, a 33.2% Margin and What…

Netflix reports third quarter results on Tuesday against a guidance set it published three months ago and has not revised since. The July letter put revenue at $12,860 million, diluted earnings at $0.82 a share and the operating margin at 33.2%, five points above the same quarter of 2025.

Netflix goes into the print carrying a year of damage on the tape. The shares closed Friday at $70.53, down 2.86% on the session, leaving it 41.81% lower over twelve months and 25.07% lower for the year to date, with a market capitalization of $293.68 billion.

Results Post at 1:01 p.m. Pacific With the Interview 44 Minutes Later

Netflix set the mechanics in a release on 14 September. Results go up on ir.netflix.net at approximately 1:01 p.m. Pacific Time on Tuesday 20 October, and a live video interview starts at approximately 1:45 p.m. Pacific on the company’s investor relations YouTube channel, according to the announcement. A recording is expected around 2:30 p.m. Pacific.

Co-chief executives Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos take the questions alongside chief financial officer Spence Neumann and finance and investor relations head Spencer Wang. Analysts submit in advance, so there is no open call, and the letter published at 1:01 carries the quarter’s only written guidance for the fourth quarter.

Netflix Guided Q3 to $12.86 Billion After the Street Had Been Carrying $0.84

The July guidance landed below where analysts were, which is why the shares fell on an otherwise in-line quarter. Benzinga’s forecast page records a consensus of $0.84 at the time the guidance was issued against the $0.82 Netflix put out, and the current consensus has since converged on the company’s own $0.82 with revenue at $12.87 billion.

A second consensus provider lands in the same place on both revenue and earnings. Hudson Labs puts consensus revenue at $12,879 million and earnings at $0.82, so the Street is no longer asking Netflix to beat its own number by much. The comparison that matters sits in the fourth quarter guidance, because the full-year range of $51.0 billion to $51.4 billion still has to be reconciled with whatever Tuesday prints.

Investor Takeaway

Consensus has converged on Netflix’s own $0.82 after starting at $0.84, so the quarter is less a test of the print than of the fourth quarter guidance published alongside it.

The $3 Billion Advertising Target Leaves One Quarter to Land It

Netflix told shareholders in July it was “on track to deliver approximately $3 billion in ads revenue in 2026,” roughly double the prior year, with United States upfront negotiations in advanced stages. The company tied advertiser interest to its live slate, naming the Women’s World Cup, an expanded NFL schedule, WWE and MLB events.

The company does not break out advertising revenue as a line item, so the number arrives as commentary rather than as a figure anyone can check against a filing. Programmatic now accounts for more than half of non-live ad inventory, and the fill rate on live events is the detail worth listening for in the interview rather than in the letter.

A 33.2% Margin and $1.5 Billion of Free Cash Flow Are the Lines to Read

Second quarter free cash flow came in at $1.53 billion against $2.27 billion a year earlier, a drop Netflix attributed to content spending timing. Content amortization is expected to grow about 10% across 2026 and more slowly in the second half, which is the mechanism behind the guided margin expansion.

Costs moved again in the week before the print, outside the quarter being reported. Netflix cut about 1,000 roles, roughly 6% of a workforce of about 16,000, mostly in product, technology, legal and human resources, Reuters reported citing the Wall Street Journal. The cuts came six days before the print, so any charge or saving attached to them lands in the fourth quarter rather than in Tuesday’s margin.

Investor Takeaway

A guided 33.2% third quarter margin against 31.5% for the full year implies the fourth quarter carries the weaker half, so the margin beat matters less than what the letter says about December.

An 84% Beat Rate Has Come With 2.6% Surprises, So the Guidance Decides It

Netflix arrives in a week the market is already treating as a verdict on megacap earnings, after the Nasdaq’s worst week since June and with the Nasdaq 100 sitting 6.52% below its high. Meta follows later in the week, which gives the sector two readings in quick succession.

The earnings season so far has flattered companies on the headline without rewarding them much. FactSet counted an 84% beat rate on third quarter EPS through 16 October, above the five-year average, while the average surprise ran at 2.6% against a 7.5% five-year norm. On that pattern a Netflix beat on the headline would be ordinary, and the fourth quarter guidance would be the part that decides the reaction.
