39 State Bankers Associations Launch BankChain Alliance to…

Thirty-nine state bankers associations announced on August 25 the formation of BankChain Alliance, an industry-owned blockchain network built to let banks of every size offer modern payment services while keeping local lending inside the communities they serve.

The Alliance plans to build a common blockchain platform that participating institutions will own, design and govern together, giving banks capabilities such as smart payment tools, tokenized deposits, stablecoins and automated settlement while holding to the regulatory standards, security and trust that customers expect from their banks. The move follows warnings, reported by FinanceFeeds, that stablecoin adoption could pull deposits out of the banking system and squeeze lending at smaller and regional banks that rely on those balances to fund loans.

Members Will Own the Network

The initiative, which the Alliance calls one of the most expansive efforts among state bankers associations, is running a selection process to name a technology partner ahead of a targeted 2027 launch. Tokenized deposits place a customer’s existing bank balance on a blockchain so it can move around the clock, and the automated settlement the group cites can clear those transfers without the batch delays of legacy payment systems.

Organizers say the finished network will interoperate with other systems and will invite ownership from banks across the country, positioning the platform as shared infrastructure rather than a single vendor’s product.

Kathy Kraninger, interim chair of the Alliance and president and CEO of the Florida Bankers Association, called the effort a chance for “banks of all sizes building their own future.” She said the collaboration represents thousands of banks and described the planned system as a secure, regulated, industry-built and industry-owned network that lets institutions in rural, urban and regional communities keep serving customers safely and efficiently.

The effort mirrors wider infrastructure work across the sector, including Swift’s blockchain ledger, which went live this year with 17 banks across six continents set to pilot cross-border payments settled in tokenized deposits.

Thousands of Banks Line Up

The participating associations together represent thousands of financial institutions serving millions of consumers, businesses and communities nationwide. Members run coast to coast, from the Alabama, Florida and Georgia associations in the Southeast to the Oregon and Washington associations on the Pacific, with groups in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas among the thirty-nine.

Each association serves its own market, and the group frames the initiative as a shared conviction that banking works best when built collaboratively, governed by industry and open to institutions of any size. This thinking tracks moves already under way at individual lenders such as Wells Fargo, which is preparing tokenized deposits for corporate clients that could connect to a shared network and give the bank around-the-clock settlement.

BankChain Alliance joins a fast-growing field of bank-led blockchain projects, among them US Bancorp, which is testing a dollar-backed stablecoin on the Stellar blockchain to speed money movement for its clients. The Alliance has yet to name its technology partner, and it will need to turn a coalition of thousands of banks into a working network to meet its 2027 target.
